First Prize

Thank you to the contestants and voters in our parakeet contest! It was very difficult to choose just ten of the entries for you to vote on. There were many that only just missed out being on this voting page..

Polling is open until Wednesday, November 2, at 10pm EST (New York time).

Please scroll down to read the entire entry below the polling box, then come back up to vote.

1. A few weeks after I got my budgie Elvis (around Christmas time), he escaped from his cage and I couldn’t find him anywhere. After an hour of searching I suddenly saw him…nestled in my Christmas tree among all the ornaments, as content as could be, silently having fun watching me frantically search the whole house. That’s the day I realized that sometimes WE provide the amusement for our pets instead of the other way around.

2. Even though all the males sing the same song, somehow they’ve all also learned how to say something similar to “what?” when they don’t understand what happened. Nothing cuter than watching them all tilt their heads and look at the bottom of the cage when one makes a toy fall and they all say “what?”.

3. Our parakeet is Disco learned to speak within three weeks, with his first phrase being “Pretty bird.” Since then, Disco has amazed us with his ability to mimic, his most recent jewels being “Don’t just stand there, bust a move” and a tweaked version of the Flintstones’ theme song. Besides speaking, the funniest thing Disco probably does is the occasional roll-over, which is just so silly to see a parakeet do!

4. I really hate when people say that parakeets are great “beginner birds” or “training birds” as if these are the birds you practice on before getting a *real* bird! But, when I hold little baby Tori in my hands and she actually nestles down into my palm and makes these tender little “nemping” sounds, and her eyes flutter closed when I rub behind her head, I know this is no practice run. She’s the real deal.

5. This is my niece’s budgie, Talyn, who I’m looking after while my niece is travelling. Talyn is a bit disabled (one leg is bent) but it doesn’t slow him down a bit, and he’s very smart and a good talker. The other day he was sitting on my shoulder, chatting, and I couldn’t believe it when he said, “Help! I’ve been turned into a budgie!” (really, they taught him that…) lol

6. My green and yellow parakeet (cosmo) used to bark like a dog :) It was hilarious when a cat would walk past the window where his cage would be, Cosmo would bark and the cat would run away…lol RIP Cosmo :( My baby passed away at the age of 13 years from a stroke, first it paralyzed him then he passed away, the little fella tried holding on for me because I was so upset but he couldnt :(

7. My Sky used to be obsessed with my sky blue Crocs (what a coincidence), he learned how to talk and spoke to the Crocs saying “Hi, cutie patootie” to my shoes!

8. Mr. Mervyn Twitters loves to hold conversations with himself and will do so for hours on end. He also loves to fling his toys around his cage and them chase them down and fling them again. He can crawl upside down along the top of his cage – he is a very fun bird to watch.

9. My blue and green parakeet, Chipper, was an amazing little bird. She was so talented, she would do back flips and taught herself how to use a hamster ball. Unfortunately she had a heart attack and died of stroke a few weeks later… when she died she wanted her final moments with me, her best friend.

10. Shippo, RIP, would hang upside down on his swing, swinging back and forth, and wolf whistle at me as I came out of the bathroom. Then proceed to make kissy noises when I walked up to his cage.
